The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya West in the Central Region, Nenyi George Andah has waded into the ongoing debate on the privatization of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) with a call on Ghanaians to vote out President John Mahama on November 7 to save ECG.
Touching the ideologies and philosophy of the opposition New Patriotic Party, as the party which believes in development in freedom, Nenyi George Andah said “We in the NPP believe in developing the private sector because it is the engine of growth of every economy.”
“As a party we are not against privatization. We support privatization but we believe due diligence and right processes must be followed to ensure that government and the people of Ghana become the ultimate beneficiaries of any such transaction,” he emphasized.
Ghana has qualified to receive $500 million under the Compact 2 of the Millennium Development Account to help turn the energy sector around.
Under the Concession, the state would enter into a long-term contract: 20 – 30 years with the private partner, where the private partner would have the exclusive right to operate, maintain and carry out investments in ECG for a defined number of years.
The private partner would have the responsibility for the operation and maintenance of all assets and investment during the period.
The state would retain full ownership of ECG as the asset holding company; at the end of the concession period, control of ECG reverts to the state unless GoG decides to extend or re-tender the concession.
But contributing to discussions on Oman FM in relations to moves by President Mahama administration to privatize ECG, Nenyi George Andah, described the deal as a bad one.
“As far as this privatization deal is concerned, it doesn’t look good. Ghanaians are not going to be the ultimate beneficiaries,” he noted.
He added that, “this concession that is being given to the private investor doesn’t look like the one that took the interest of Ghana into consideration.”
According to the marketing guru and former Marketing Manager of MTN, government should rather look for a Ghanaian citizen with the right expertise and competent team to partner with ECG to transform the company so that they retain the profits which the company would generate in the country rather than a foreign investor, who would repatriate the profits.
Nenyi George Andah lashed out at the government for contributing to the challenges confronting the state power distributor.
Government is indebted to ECG to the tune of $400million and this is making the operations of ECG difficult.
Nenyi George Andah blamed the current woes of ECG which he claimed has contributed to energy crisis in the country on what he described as poor leadership of President John Dramani Mahama.
“It all boils down to leadership. If the leadership is not taking the right direction….if the leadership doesn’t appoint people with expertise we will continue to face the same problems,” he cautioned.
He charged Ghanaians to vote out President Mahama led NDC administration during the November 7 polls and give Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo- Addo, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) the opportunity to put in place workable measures to restore the country’s economy to sound footing.
“Let’s change this NDC administration and bring someone will serve Ghana. Someone who will not put together arrogant team. Someone who will put in place a competent team who will not steal the resources of the country,” Nenyi George Andah suggested.
