The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for Awutu Senya West in the Central Region Mr. Nenyi George Andah has charged Ghanaians to challenge President John Dramani Mahama to mention the names of any individuals or organizations which attempted to offer him a bribe but refused.
Mr. Andah believes the ongoing discussions on President Mahama’s claim that he has never accepted a bribe should be pushed further in a direction which will compel him to expose those who go about trying to corrupt public servants.
"Today, I could be JM who might have resisted the temptation, but per the laws of Ghana, both the giver and the receiver are equally on the wrong side of the law as far as bribery is concerned".
In an interview with the BBC on the sidelines of the Anti Corruption summit in UK, President Mahama said, “Any human being would have encountered corruption in one way or the other. What you need to do is to put yourself in a position to (resist it).”
But when specifically asked if he had ever taken a bribe before, the President was quick to say no, “I haven’t taken a bribe.”
Speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda, Mr. George Andah deduced President Mahama's statement to mean that he had been offered bribe before in his capacity as a serving public officer.
“I feel we should all assist the President to fight against corruption and dare HE President Mahama to mention the names of all those who offered him bribe but refused. So that we know whether those people have been punished and blacklisted, or if they are still in the pool of suppliers executing government projects, and tempting other public officers,” he suggested.
Mr. Andah was surprised that President Mahama could go to the extent of saying that he is vigorously fighting corruption when his administration is plagued with numerous corruption scandals, and the actions to fight corruption was not showing there was a strong commitment from the Leadership.
Mr. George Andah, who is also a founding member of OccupyGhana, touching on the Smartty’s bus re-branding saga, accused officials at the Flagstaff House for trying to shield the former Transport Minister Dzifa Attivor from being prosecuted.
According to him, the analysis of the documents covering Smarttys bus branding scandal, and subsequent events, back with some classified information available to OccupyGhana suggests that the Minister of Justice and Attorney General may have recommended the criminal prosecution of certain individuals who spearheaded the GHS 3.6million bus re-branding saga but some people at the presidency were frustrating the process.
Mr. Andah hinted that OccupyGhana may return to court to compel government to release the recommendation of the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to the Office of the Chief of Staff with respect to the Smartty’s bus re-branding deal.
