80 senior police officers reassigned as IGP makes third shake-up in 7 months

About 80 senior police officers from various departments and regions have been affected in a major shake-up that has hit the Ghana Police Service barely six months to the elections in November this year.

One of them is the Accra Regional Police Commander, COP George Akuffo Dampare, who has been transferred to head the Police Command and Staff College at Winneba in the Central Region.

His transfer takes immediate effect after serving the command for just six months.

Dr. Dampare took over the Accra Regional Police Command after he served as Director General Finance of the Ghana Police Service.

He has been credited for his lead role in the swift arrest of the alleged killer of former Abuakwa North MP, J.B. Danquah.

The transfer of the Accra Region Police Commander, COP George Akuffo Dampare has been viewed with surprise.

Others who were transferred include former Tafo Pankrono Police Commander and onetime Public Affairs Director of the Ghana Police Service, DSP Kwesi Ofori, who will be heading the Adabraka Police Command.

DCOP Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae now moves from the Volta Region to the Eastern Region as the Regional Commander.

DCOP David Nenyi Ampah Bennin of the Police Intelligence and Professional Standard Bureau is swapping places with DCOP Osabarima Oware Asare Pinkro II who was Director General in charge of Special Duties.

The IGP has also appointed a replacement for the Eastern regional police commander DCOP Angwubutoge Awuni who passed away March 14, 2016.

Volta Regional commander DCOP Peterkin Yentumi Gyinae moves to the Eastern region.

The changes come less than seven months to the general elections in November. This is the third wave of transfers.

The IGP made as many as 29 changes at the top hierarchy of the service within 20 days of his appointment on November 9, 2015.

In the second and biggest wave, the transfer of at least 61 senior police officers was announced in January 2016.
