Pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) has lauded the Supreme Court for its ruling on the current voters register.

The Supreme Court on Thursday, May 5, 2016 ordered the Electoral Commission to expunge from the register the names of all dead people as well as over 4 million persons who registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.

This, according to the Court is because the register in its current form is not reasonably credible.

The apex court also ordered the EC to give opportunity to all those whose names will be removed because they used the NHIS card as proof of citizenship to register again, if they qualify.

The ruling follows a suit filed by a former National Youth Organizer of the People's National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako challenging the credibility of the current voter’s register.

Speaking to Oman News Convener of Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) David Boateng Asante said “we are very happy about the decision of the court.”

LMVCA embarked on series of street protests to put pressure on the Electoral Commission (EC) to compile a new voter’s register because the current register is over bloated with foreigners and minors.

One person lost his eyes in the process due to the use of brute force and firing of teargas on the demonstrators by the police.

“We were initially asking for new voter’s register but the Supreme Court says that EC should delete the 600,000 dead people whose names are on the electoral roll and those who used NHIS card to register so we have accepted it,” David Asante said.

“What we need is a clean voter’s register …if they will do new voter’s register it is up to them,” he added.
