The 2016 Policy Advisor to the Campaign team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Boakye Agyarko has defended Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the party’s vice presidential candidate for his comments that the current seat of government is not balanced in terms of religion.
Dr. Bawumia told a gathering in Bolgatanga in upper west that, the current seat of government is occupied by persons who are mainly from the Christian fraternity which to him does not create the needed balance within the highest political positions in Ghana.
The NPP running mate also suggested that because the President is a Christian, his Vice should have been a Muslim as has been deliberately done by his party over the years to create a balance.
The former Deputy Bank of Ghana Governor has since been rebuked by members of the governing National Democratic Congress(NDC) for his comments with some describing it as unfortunate.
But speaking on Oman FM's political analysis program "Boiling Point" Mr. Agyarko said NPP is in full support of the comments made by its running mate.
According to him, the NPP believes in using either religion or tribalism to unify the country that is why anytime the party had elected a flagbearer who is a Christian, it has selected a Muslim to partner him.
Mr Agyarko noted that "when Professor Adu Boahen was elected as flagbearer we selected Simon D. Donor as his running mate, Victor Owusu became our flagbearer and we picked Yakubu Tolo as his running mate, John Agyekum Kufuor was elected as flagbearer and we selected late Alhaji Aliu Mahama and now Nana Addo is our flagbearer and we picked Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as his running mate."
"We don't regret it , if we have the opportunity we will do it again, he stated.
According to Mr Agyarko, "our tradition believes in the unity of the nation be it religion or tribal"
He said Dr Bawumia was only re-emphasing the position of the party and rejected claim by those criticizing him that his comments were inciting and dangerous.
Mr. Agyarko argued that New Patriotic Party(NPP) is a visionary political party that is why "we make special effort to unite the country when we have the opportunity do so.
