The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail in the sum of GHC 200,000 bail by the Asokwa Magistrate Court.
He was arraigned before the court on Wednesday morning for assaulting a public officer.
Mr. Antwi-Boasiako allegedly slapped Member of Parliament for Manhyia North Constituency, Collins Owusu Amankwah, and the Constituency Secretary, Felix Ibrahim.
The alleged assault took place on the evening of May 1, 2016 at a registration centre in front of prospective voters who had queued to register in the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
Collins Amankwah and Felix Ibrahim initially lodged a complaint with the police who subsequently invited Chairman Wontumi for questioning.
Mr. Boasiako handed himself to the police yesterday after being declared wanted, and has remained in police custody.
Hundreds of NPP supporters thronged the Kumasi Central police station, on Tuesday claiming the NPP leader's detention is politically motivated.
Meanwhile, Oman News can confirm that Hon. Collins Owusu has through his lawyers written to the Ashanti Regional Police Command to discontinue the case.
