The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Bosiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has been detained by the Ashanti Regional Police.
His detention has angered supporters of the NPP in the region who have mobilized themselves and besieged the Regional Police command.
Wontumi was declared wanted by the Ashanti Regional Police Command for allegedly assaulting the Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Felix Ibrahim, and a secretary to the party in that constituency, Collins Amankwah, at Krofrom in Kumasi.
The alleged assault took place on the evening of May 1, 2016 at a registration centre in front of prospective voters who had queued to register in the ongoing limited voters’ registration exercise.
Collins Amankwah and Felix Ibrahim initially lodged a complaint with the police who subsequently invited Chairman Wontumi for questioning.
The police in a statement signed by ASP Tanko however indicated that the NPP regional chairman refused to honour the invitation.
It is in this light that the Ashanti Regional CID was instructed to have chairman Wontumi arrested to assist with investigations.
The police in their statement added that it will be in the chairman’s interest to report to the police and answer to the accusations of assault.
