The 2016 Policy Advisor to the Campaign team of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Boakye Agyarko, has described as alarming the number of construction projects President Mahama administration has awarded to foreign construction firms based in Ghana through sole sourcing, despite the existence of Procurement Act.

According to him, President Mahama administration has awarded as many as 10 projects to foreign firms.

He noted that Queiroz Galvao, a Brazilian construction firm alone has been awarded seven out of the ten projects.

Mr. Boakye Agyarko mentioned some of the projects which had been awarded through sole sourcing as “Kumasi Central Market re-development, Kasoa Interchange, Tamale Airport, Selected Asphalting of Accra Town roads, Kwame Nkrumah Circle Interchange 2, Nima Storm Drain, OAS Affordable Housing, as well as Construction of Hanger for Ghana Armed Forces (GAF).

Speaking on Oman FM Mr. Agyarko expressed disgust at government for flouting the Procurement Act.

He argued that the only motivation for President Mahama administration for engaging in sole sourcing venture was to inflate the cost of these projects and rob the state.

Mr. Agyarko was shocked that Kwame Nkrumah Interchange is costing $100millions while the Tamale Airport project and Kumasi Central Market re-development are costing $100million and $298million respectively.

“It looks to me that Mahama administration is defrauding us through sole sourcing and awarding of dubious contracts,” he said.

He disclosed that most of the foreign firms that government has awarded with the projects were involved in Brazil Petrobras scandals.

He wondered why government would award contracts to firms whose executives have been jailed for their involvement in scandals.
