Unemployed nurses demonstrates in Accra

Over 2,000 unemployed nurses and midwifes across the country have taken to the streets of Accra, the Capital of Ghana, to express their displeasure over their long stay in the house without jobs.

The angry nurses and midwifes, who were in their uniforms wore red arm bands in protest against the Ministry of Health for delay in posting them.

They were wielding placards some of which red “A hungry nurse is a potential killer”, “We are tired of staying in home,” “We need our financial Clearance now. No more delays!! The nurses, who are under the umbrella of coalition of unemployed nurses say all attempts to get employment at the government hospitals, have failed.

What has worsened their plight is the fact that they cannot apply to private hospitals because they are bonded as part of their training as nurses. They were asked to go and pick recruitment forms from the various regional health directorates, but to their utter shock, there were no forms at the various directorates.

Speaking to Oman FM, Spokesperson for the Coalition of Unemployed Nurses Adams Masahudu said most of them completed school as far back as August 2014 and have since been in the house and doing nothing. Adam Masahudu, who expressed grave concern over the issue said, life has been very unbearable to majority of them. He noted that the unbearable economic situation in the country has compelled most of his colleagues who bought motorbikes to facilitate their movement during their training to sell them. "The hardship is too much my brother," he stated

According to Adams Masahudu, it will be inappropriate and shameful on his part to go to his friends and beg for money each day to feed himself having graduated as a nurse. "I'm more than 35 years. Must I now have to go to my friends and beg for money to be put in my pocket? he quizzed. "It's not proper," he added.
