The Vice Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Mr. Henry Asante has urged the opposition parties contesting this year’s election to do everything possible to ensure that votes, which will be cast in their favour, are protected.

He said the opposition parties will have themselves to blame if they fail to monitor closely all the activities of the Electoral Commission particularly on the day of voting.

Speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda Mr. Henry Asante, who said he does not trust EC, charged the opposition party’s not to trust whatever the Electoral Commission says.

“I’m urging the parties contesting this election that they should never trust whatever the EC says,” he charged.

According to him, EC has so far not demonstrated transparency in the way it is going out about processes, which will lead up to the November 7 polls.

Mr. Asante reminded the opposition parties regarding the statement made by of one of the Supreme Court judges who sat on the 2012 election petition that elections are won at the polling station.

He said, “If elections are won at the polling stations then you must do everything possible to protect your votes.”

Making reference to what happened in Kenya during the 2005 presidential and parliamentary elections, Mr. Henry Asante stated that the opposition party led by Raila Amolo Odinga was leading with massive votes, but said in less than four hours later the results strangely changed with the leader of the ruling party, Mwai Kibaki leading by 320,000 votes.

Shocked by the incidence, Mr. Asante quizzed how this could happen.

According to him, it is clear that in Africa, elections can be rigged and charged the parties to be very vigilante.

He called on the party’s to make sure that their agents to be part and parcel of all the activities on the voting day as well as peruse every single document that will be handed over to them by the EC to prevent any rigging.
