The New Patriotic Party Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya West Constituency in the Central Region, Mr. George Andah has lashed out at President John Dramani Mahama over his claim that Ghana’s economy is one of the best in the world despite global challenges.
Mr. Andah, who mounted strong opposition to President Mahama’s claim, said it is surprising that President Mahama could peddle such falsehood when it is public knowledge that the economy is in the mess.
He questioned why Mahama administration would take Ghana back to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) if the economy is resilient as he (Mahama) has claimed.
President Mahama while addressing a durbar of chiefs and people of Akwamufie in the Eastern Region during his “Accounting to the People" tour on Tuesday noted that the economic situations in many countries worldwide are in crisis due to the fall in the world market price for crude oil.
“Today, the world economy is in crisis. Some countries like Saudi Arabia that have huge reserves for oil today are implementing austerity measures, increasing the price of petroleum products, increasing the price of utility and it is not only Saudi Arabia. Many of the countries with huge foreign reserves or billions of dollars today are facing financial challenges…
“…Because of prudent economic management, even though Ghana is experiencing a drop in the price of the oil that we export, we have sustained a drop in the price of our gold exports for almost four to five years now. You will notice that our economy still remains resilient and is not facing the kind of crisis that we are seeing in other parts of the world and that means that economic management of the economy has been good,” said the President.
But speaking on Oman FM, Mr George Andah, who is a Marketing guru disagreed.
According to him, IMF is the last resort for countries whose economies are in bad state stressing that Ghana has subscribed to the Britain Wood Institution because the country's economy is in tatters.
He was flabbergasted by the assertion of Mahama administration that it has undertaken massive infrastructural development than any other government apart from CPP government under late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
He accused President Mahama administration of inflating cost of the projects it has executed, saying that construction of 1km road which cost $480,000 under the NPP is now costing $1.3m under NDC administration.
"So about half of this money have been inflated," he said adding that
"Significant number of these projects have been inflated."
Mr. George Andah stated that the country is not getting value for money in all the projects executed under NDC government.
