A-G ordered to respond to suit against voters’ register

The Supreme Court has asked the Attorney-General’s department to respond to a suitalleging that the current electoral roll isbloated, within two days.

Former National Youth Organiser of thePeople’s National Convention (PNC), AbuRamadan and one Evans Nimako, dragged theElectoral Commission (EC) to the SupremeCourt seeking an annulment of the entirevoters’ register.

The two gentlemen want a declaration that thecurrent voters’ register which contains thenames of persons who have not establishedqualification to be registered, is not reasonablyaccurate or credible and therefore inconsistentwith Article 45(a) of the Constitution therebymaking same unconstitutional, null, void and ofno effect.

The AG’s office was expected to respond tothe suit as second defendant about a fortnightago, but failed to do so citing challenges. The case has been adjourned to the 14th ofApril 2016.The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed anapplication for injunction to restrain the Electoral Commission (EC) from going ahead with the Abuakwa North constituency by-election and the limited registration exercise.

Abu Ramadan was seeking for the injunction toallow for a completion of the substantive case.
