The recurring leakage of West AfricanExamination Council (WAEC) examinationpapers is far from over as three of the papersin the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have beenleaked. Some students in the Greater Accra and Easternregions had access to the examination papersbecause between 12 midnight and 4 a.m on theday the papers were written.

The Oral English, Integrated Science and SocialStudies papers have all been leaked. There are also pictures on social media showingstudents copying answers on their thighs.

Whatsapp group. The papers were circulated among somestudents mainly through social media showing students copying answers on their thighs. The papers were circulated among somestudents mainly through social media platformsparticularly Whatsapp.A Whatsapp group chat with one Neezy Ranking, the administrator and alleged student of a first-class senior high school (SHS) in the EasternRegion, was one of the sources of the leakedpapers.

The Whatsapp group is named Lagadia- a termstudents use for leaked examination papers orwhat is also popularly referred to amongstudent circles as “apor”.The group comes alive from 10.pm when theexpectant students keep asking their sourcewhen the questions will be leaked.

At dawn, the supplier of the papers sends thequestions to the group using a MTN phonenumber. In one of the chats, Neezy Ranking, which is anickname, appears to calm the nerves of hisclients, saying in shorthand and pidgin English :“All my clients, jx relax and wait patiently for delaga…int science go drop ditto ditto,” to wit: “Allmy client, just relax and wait patiently for theleaked papers… the Integrated Science willappear ditto ditto.”

“From my source he say by 2 a.m or 3 a.m hedrop give me. He make late craa 4: 30 a.m”,meaning : “ My source says by 2 a.m or 3 a.m.he will send me the papers. Even if he is late, itwill be 4. 30 a.m.”Indeed the questions appeared as assured, onlythat the question numbers were charged andsome red herrings thrown in.In other instances , the questions were tweakedslightly with synonyms.

In another chat, when the papers had finallyarrived, Ranking told his group that they shouldstart solving the questions, noting that twoothers that were sent earlier were pastquestions from 2007.

Meanwhile sources at WAEC have confirmedthat some officials had received reports aboutthe leaked questions, probably from thehinterlands where the papers had been dispatched earlier.

The sources, however indicated that the councilwas investigating the issue and would deal withthe culprits.

The Head of the Ghana National Officer of WAEC, the Very Rev. Samuel Nii Nmai Ollennu, told the Junior Graphic in an interview lastmonth that the Council has introduced newsecurity measures to prevent the leakage of papers in all its examinations.

He however refused to divulge the measuresbecause according to him, the Council “we wantto ensure the sanctity and credibility of ourexaminations” it appears whichever syndicate is leaking the papers has found a way around thesecurity measures.
