Thousands of Ghanaians are expected to hit the streets of Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 to protest against the Electoral Commission.

The protest, which is dubbed “Baamu Yada” (we won’t agree) is aimed to exert more pressure on the Electoral Commission to carry out validation exercise to clean the current voter’s register, since it is bloated and make it more credible for this year’s election.

The demonstration is being organized by the pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) in collaboration with Movement for Change and the Ashanti Regional branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking to Oman News ahead of tomorrow’s protest, Convener for Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) David Boateng Asante said they are done with all the preparation for the protest saying everything is in order.

“As I speak to you I’m standing in front of the Regional Police Command. We just ended a meeting with the regional commander DCOP Kofi Boakye and we are satisfied with all the arrangement including the routes to be followed,” he stated.

He said the police have assured them of adequate protection throughout the protest but added that “we have also taken the necessary steps to beef up our security.”

According to David Asante, there is high enthusiasm in Kumasi regarding the protest stressing that it is indicative of the fact that Ghanaians were unhappy with the way EC is handling processes for this year’s election.
