EC sued over planned limited voters registration exercise next month

The Brong Ahafo Regional Youth Organizer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe, has filed a motion at the Supreme Court to stop the limited voter registration exercise slated for April 28, 2016.

The motion on the limited voters’ registration is scheduled for hearing on April 6, 2016.

According to Mr. Baffoe, he is of the firm conviction that until the final determination of the case by the court, the limited registration by the EC should not go on.

Mr. Baffoe, like many others – including a former Youth Organizer of the Peoples National Convention, Abu Ramadan and one Evans Nimako, a farmer – hold that the current electoral roll is not credible.

Meanwhile, a similar injunction against the April 28 limited voters’ registration by Messers Ramadan and Nimako earlier was thrown out.

Mr. Baffoe and other critics of the current register, say the electoral roll contains names of persons who have not established qualification to register and whose registration were founded on proof of qualification with the National Health Insurance (NHIS) card.

Opponents of the electoral roll say because the Supreme Court has declared as unconstitutional the use of the NHIS card for registration, listings that were done with the cards are null and void.

They said the respondents had admitted that there were registered voters who used the NHIS Card to register in 2012 with the EC describing them as the majority of potential voters.
