Six bystanders sustained gunshot wounds when they were caught in crossfire between Police and escaping robbers at Awudome earlier on Wednesday afternoon.

The six are currently being treated at the Police hospital where doctors say they may be discharged today.

The two armed men were reportedly fleeing with their loot after robbing a forex bureau at Kaneshie when Okada riders in the area chased them to Awudome. Eyewitnesses told Oman News that two were chased to a construction site behind the Royal House Chapel in Awudome where they exchanged gunfire with a policeman on duty.

They are said to have been severely beaten by a mob after their attempt to escape failed. It took a reinforcement team led by the Greater Accra Regional Commander, COP, George Dampare to get the mob to release the two.

One of the fleeing robbers was reportedly hit in the head by a bullet and is said to be undergoing surgery at the Police hospital. Sources say two were using locally manufactured guns and attempted to make away with local and foreign currency from the forex bureau.
