Black Stars coach Avram Grant, says the era where Ghanaians players are begged to play for the national team is over. The coach was reacting to reports that he had pleaded with goalkeeper Adams Kwarasey to return to the squad to play in Ghana’s 2017 Nations Cup qualifier against Mozambique on Thursday March 24. Kwarasey is making a return to the team after a 21-month hiatus after complaining of unfair treatment from goalkeepers’ trainer Nassam Yakubu. Speaking at a news conference in Accra on Tuesday March 22, Mr Grant insisted he would only call up players, who are dedicated to the cause of the team.

“The players need to convince me that they deserve to be in this squad,” he stated. “I don’t convince any player. The day Ghana begs players to play, it is finished…the criteria for my selection, one, is quality, because we are playing football. “Second is good personality and desire to play for the national team. You cannot play for the national team and not have the desire. All these players that are here have all these criteria…any player that doesn’t want to play can tell me and I will let him go,” he added. Meanwhile, Mr Grant explained that he chose to call Inter Allies midfielder Evans Mensah to the squad because he had seen him play and was impressed with his persistence in his last game. Mensah was called up as a last-minute substitute for injured David Accam ahead of the Mozambique game.
