Ghana is not adequately prepared to foil any terrorists attack, the Member of Parliament for Fanteakwa South Hon. Kofi Okyere Agyekum has said.
According to him, security agencies in the country have not taken any concrete steps to thwart any terror attack for him to be convinced that we are ready as a country.
“If somebody tells you that Ghana is prepared about any terrorists attack then the fellow is deceiving us,” Hon. Okyere Agyekum told Fiifi Boafo, host of Oman FM National Agenda Show on Thursday.
He is in doubt whether Ghana could in anyway thwart terrorist’s attacks, since they (terrorists) have been able to attack countries like American and France which are very sophisticated. His comment follows a statement issued by the National Security Council, warning Ghanaians to be vigilant, cautious and curious because there is a terror threat on Ghana.
The Council met and reviewed the recent attacks in Mali, Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire and current intelligence on extremist activities in West Africa.
Hon. Agyekum is worried about the fact that Ghanaians have been left in the dark, because there has not been any programme to sensitize the public considering how sophisticated and strategic the terrorists are.
Hon. Okyere Agyekum flayed the security agencies for failing to educate the public arguing that “for all you know the terrorists may be living with us and preparing the ground for attack.”
He challenged the security agencies to analyze and figure out what could be the possible reason for Ghana to be susceptible to terror attack.
“Could it be that the terrorists groups are feeling that we are supporting the Americans because we accepted the two ex-Gitmo detainees, that is why?” he quizzed.
According to him, there is the urgent need for the security agencies to do thorough investigations to unravel the reason because “if you have a problem and you don’t know the cause, you cannot begin to proffer solutions to it.”
“Assuming it is the Guantanamo detainees, then we can decide to send them back or negotiate,” he said.
