The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is calling for the appointment of an independent auditor to scrutinize the November polls.

According to the PPP, the auditor’s main duty will be to examine results of the presidential election before they are declared by the Electoral Commission (EC).

The PPP believes this would resolve the challenges encountered in the 2012 election which led to the results being challenged by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) in court.

The NPP challenged the results of the 2012 elections at the Supreme Court alleging the election was rigged to favour John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at a press conference, Director of Policy of Progressive People’s Party, Kofi Asamoah Siaw, explained that the only effective way to ensure that the results of the 2016 polls are credible and prevent some irregularities that characterized the 2012 election, is to introduce the auditing process.

“The Electoral Commission, if going ahead with this exercise, it cannot be complete without an audit component and we will dispute the results because of the probability of possible manipulation of the election results.

The EC wants transparent elections and it wants to publish and declare results that are of high integrity so introducing the auditing process is even going to help the Electoral Commission anyway…”he explained.
