FIVE houses including a building accommodating some personnel of Ghana National Fire Service have been burnt at Kportor, near Kintampo North in the Brong Ahafo region following chieftaincy clashes there.
This follows a long-standing chieftaincy dispute between two Gonja factions leading to the departure of one of the chiefs from the town a year ago.
The incidence has compelled most of the residents to abandon the town for cover in the bushes.
It is not clear what sparked the violence, but residents fear a misunderstanding between the two sides may degenerate into a full-blown battle in the area.
One of the residents who gave his name as Philemon told Oman News that one of the chiefs left the town after clashes sometime ago and upon his return, the other faction demanded he leaves town, as he's not needed in the town.
He said this resulted in firing of arms in protest of the chief's arrival.
“I’m currently in the bush because they are firing live bullets,” he stated.
According to him, the police have picked up one of the Gonja leaders to the Kintampo police station for instigating the violence.
The Kintampo police are on the ground trying to restore calm.
The police declined to speak on record saying they are on the ground and will answer questions later.
