The Chairperson of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, has written to all directors and senior staff of the electoral body who are due for retirement to proceed on leave.
Her action forms part of plans to bring on board fresh minds to help in the day-to-day running of the Commission.
A former Chief Director of the Electoral Commission, Kwame Damoah Agyemang, who revealed this on Oman FM’s National Agenda on Tuesday described her action as misplaced considering the fact that the country has barely 9 months to go for a general elections.
According to him, the appropriate thing EC should have done was to defer the retirement of senior officers who are due for retirement and tap their experiences for this year’s election.
“We are in the election year and you have directed experienced people in the system to apply for their accumulative terminal leave and subsequently proceed on retirement. In such situations what you have to do is to defer their retirement and tapped into their expertise before you ask them to retire,” he suggested.
Mr. Damoah expressed disgust at EC chairperson Mrs. Charlotte Osei for her plans to force all the experienced officers to proceed on retirement in such a crucial elections.
He contended that employing inexperienced officers for the elections could come with serious repercussions.
Touching on the suspended National Elections Steering Committee, Mr. Damoah Agyeman described it as needless.
He said allowing the National Elections Steering Committee to function will mean ceding the role of the commission to the committee, which he said is unconstitutional.
