LMVCA clash with EC over controversial Election Steering Committee suspension

The Convener of the political pressure group, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA) David Boateng Asante has asked Ghanaians to disregard a statement which was issued by the Electoral Commission (EC) at the weekend refuting the suspension of the Election Steering Committee.

According to David Asante, he had personally spoken to some members on the controversial 18- member election steering committee, who confirmed that EC had served them notice of the suspension of the committee.

“As I speak with you, I have already spoken to some members of the committee and the fact is they have been asked to suspend their activities,” he said.

The Electoral Commission over the weekend described as "erroneous" reports that the election steering committee has been suspended. A statement signed by Director of Public Relations at the Electoral Commission, Christian Owusu Parry stated that “the Commission wishes to inform the public that the reports are erroneous and should be disregarded. The statement further added that at the Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting, held yesterday, 19th February, 2016 the Commission assured the stakeholders that after persistent calls to reconsider the setting up of the Committee, it would meet and discuss the concerns raised and inform IPAC of its decision later. “This should not be misconstrued as a suspension of the Committee. The Committee remains in place until a contrary decision is made.”

But speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda on Monday, David Asante rejected EC claims.

“EC has communicated to the members of the committee that it has suspended the committee until some pertinent issues are addressed,” he noted.

David Asante, who expressed disgust at the EC, argues that the EC’s press release was just an attempt to cover their shamefulness and nakedness.

He warned that they will resist any attempt by the EC to put together any group to rig the elections in favour of their pay masters.
