The Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC) Most Rev. Professor Emmanuel Asante has exposed the Electoral Commission over the nomination of Mr. Francis Azumah, Executive Secretary of National Peace Council who is a member of the 18- member Elections Steering Committee.
Contrary to claims by the Electoral Commission that they wrote letters to various institutions to nominate representatives to serve on the committee, Prof. Asante explained that the National Peace Council did not receive any letter from the EC asking them to nominate someone to serve on the committee.
According to Prof. Asante, Electoral Commission nominated Mr. Francis Azumah without consulting the peace council.
“The national peace council as a board has not nominated anybody to represent us. All we heard was that our executive secretary has been named to serve on the committee,” he stated.
Mr. Francis Azumah is a known member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) who has contested parliamentary elections on the party’s ticket in Builsa north.
His membership on the Elections Steering Committee has met with stiff opposition from the pressure group Let My Vote Count Alliance.
The group has accused the EC of composing a committee whose membership is tainted with loyalists of the ruling National Democratic Congress.
Speaking on Oman FM’s National Agenda, Professor Asante said the peace council got to know of the nomination of Mr. Francis Azumah after the inauguration of the committee in the media.
“I’m speaking as the chairman of the board and I believe that board members of National Peace Council will tell you that we did not receive any letter. No letter came before the board indicating that Electoral Commission wants us to nominate a member to serve on the Electoral Steering committee,” he said.
“Go and check from our last board meeting minutes, you will not find anything like that,” Prof
Asante said.
According to him, “as far as I’m concerned as the chairman and as a board no letter has come before the board …..usually when something on this nature comes the board will then decide and nominate who should represent us.”
