Meningitis death toll is alarming-Dormaa East MP

The Member of Parliament for Dormaa East Constituency William Kwasi Sabi has described the death toll arising out of the outbreak of meningitis in the country as alarming.
93 people have so far been confirmed dead from pneumococcal, meningococcal and cerebrospinal meningitis out of a total outbreak of 548 cases.The Ghana Health Service has declared Jaman North in the Bono Ahafo region as an epidemic zone.Speaking on the issue Hon.
William Sabi, who is also a member of the parliamentary select committee on health, described the current situation as scary."It is scary. We should sit up because we don’t have to see this as business as usual," he stated.
The Ghana Health Service has put in place Regional and District committees to put in place measures to tackle the diseases.But William Sabi believes the committees should be elevated and given the needed resources to outline comprehensive measures to address the situation.
He underscored the need for the Health Ministry and the Ghana Health Service to do an analysis and cross examination of the strategies put in place to control the outbreak so far to know whether it is effective or not so as to improve upon or adopt more effective strategy to tackle the diseases.Hon. William Sabi called for nationwide public education on about the disease for public to be aware in order to prevent it.According to him, sensitization about the diseases should not be restricted to the affected regions saying it will not be the best.
