Old Tafo streets remain empty after curfew hours

The streets of Old Tafo in Ashanti Region are empty Thursday morning hours after a curfew imposed yesterday was lifted.

Clashes between youth and traditional rulers over a piece of land Wednesday triggered the imposition of the curfew from six pm to six am.

Joy News Correspondent Nuredeem Mohammed reports as at 06:15 Thursday the town remains unusually quiet amid heavy police and military presence.

The Ashanti Region Security Council is expected to meet Thursday to review the curfew situation.

One person has died and several others sustained injuries after violent clashes between Muslim youth and some youths in the town who are backing the traditional authorities.

A 30-year-old man was shot by a security man and was rushed to the Tafo government hospital. He was later transferred to KATH where he died.

Wielding machetes, clubs, knives and hammers, irate Muslim youth, who claimed to be fighting a jihad, vassaulted anyone they could find on the troubled Old Tafo streets.

The vandalism and destruction was triggered by disagreements over a piece of land at the Old Tafo Cemetry.

Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, Kojo Bonsu in an interview on the Super Morning Show, on Joy FM Thursday said the curfew is likely extended until Monday, pending Parliament's approval for the extension.

He was hopeful ongoing discussions between feuding factions in the town would bring about cool heads.

He advised residents to comply with curfew hours because “the military and police are serious and the law will deal with whoever misbehaves.”

The Mayor extended condolences to the family of the man who died as a result of the violent clashes.

Meanwhile, Nurudeen Mohammed reported later that business activities in the town have started picking up amid heavy security presence.
