Report: CMS fire was deliberately set off to cover up theft

The committee set up to investigate a fire that razed down the Tema Central Medical Stores says the fire was deliberately set off to destroy evidence of theft, massive fraud and widespread procurement irregularities at the facility.

Twelve Officials including the Former head of the Central Medical stores, Peter Ekow Gyimah, have been indicted.

A report of the committee says the officials were involved in plans to burn down the CMS a year ago.

The CMS which is the central storage facility for all of Ghana’s medical and related supplies was razed down by fire in January last year.

Every single medicine purchased by the state including drugs for Malaria, HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and some imported Ebola PPEs and treatment medication which were kept at the Central Medical Stores for distribution to hospitals across the country was destroyed.

A committee was set up to investigate the cause of the fire at the storage facility.

A year on, the committee has established that the fire was deliberately caused by arsonists.

The suspected arsonist, Samuel Dogbe, who was a labourer at the CMS is currently at large and is being sought by the Bureau of National Investigation.

The Committee claims he is the cause of the delay in the release of the report.
