The Aspiring Presidential Candidate of the Convention People Party (CPP), Samia Yaaba Nkrumah, has said Ghana’s economy is struggling due to bad economic decisions by successive governments especially the present Mahama led administration.
Samia Nkrumah, who is the daughter of Ghana’s first president Dr. Kwame Nkrumah believes the economic system the country has pursued since the overthrow of the CPP government, has been detrimental to the growth of Ghanaian businesses.
“Since the illegal overthrow of the democratically elected government of CPP, every other economic decision that has been taken by successive governments has been wrong, it has been foreign and it has been self inflicting.”
The former CPP chairperson made these observations at a presidential debate organized by the party for its flagbearer hopefuls.
According to her, our economic policies have rather favoured multinational companies in the country.
That she said is the reason why some multinationals are able to evade taxes and also repatriate huge profits to their home countries.
Samia argued that the way economy has been managed over a few decades has been wrong and that it was about time we changed the system in order to advance.
“We have embraced foreign concepts. For instance the structural adjustment model, we spoke about earlier tells us to privatize and open up our market instead of building our local industries and we have also focused on inflation rather than creating employment,” she pointed out.
According to Samia, there is the need for a strong industrial policy and a strong manufacturing base to address the increasing youth unemployment.
