Security Expert and Political Analyst Irbad Ibrahim has called on the Ashanti Regional Police Command to declare state of emergency in Kumasi to enable them intensify search for those in possession of illegal arms.

Irbad believes we have gotten to a period where something extraordinary was done in order to deal with arms situation in the Ashanti region.

“We should do something extraordinary at this time by declaring state of emergency in the next one or two months to clear Kumasi and its environs of these weapons,” Irbad Ibrahim suggested.

Irbad Ibrahim was commenting on what is considered to be the biggest arms seizure in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi within the spate of weeks.

In the first instance the police arrested a 72-year old Burkinabe with a cache of arms which comprise deadly weapons at Alabar a suburb of Kumasi.

In the latest incident, police also seized two AK 47 assault rifles and 146 rounds of ammunition at Twedie in the Atwima Kwanwoma District. The guns are believed to have been concealed in a bush by armed robbers. Upon a tip off, police laid ambush in an effort to arrest the suspected criminals and destroy their armoury. To their surprise, however, personnel on the operation spotted bushfire from which they heard sporadic blasts. The swift police intervention saved the two AK47 assault rifles and the ammunitions from further destruction. Regional Police Commander DCOP Kofi Boakye assured that the police will be relentless in their search for illegal weapons, and the best option for those who are keeping them is to hand them over to the police.

Sharing his thoughts on the issue in an interview, with Oman News Mr. Irbad Ibrahim who expressed worry over the recent developments, raised questions as to how these weapons traversed country’s borders and found its way in Kumasi.

Much as he believes the weapons may have gotten to Kumasi through unapproved routes, he is also of the view that they may have passed through our border post through tacit arrangement with some big guys in the country for the purposes of 2016 elections.

“It’s either somebody has something in store for us in 2016 and therefore people have been given orders to let some of these weapons pass through or certain militants within the sub-region have got interest in Ghana,” Irbad observed.

Irbad Ibrahim who thinks Ghanaians should be worried over the issue called on the security agencies to subject nationals of neighboring countries who enter the country to thorough security checks to ensure that illegal weapons do not enter the country.
