The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has retained the Amenfi West Constituency in the Western Region after beating the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) by over a two thousand votes.
Results from all 102 polling stations and certified by the Electoral Commission (EC) put the NDC’s candidate, Eric Afful, ahead in Tuesday's by-election with 15,809 votes (52.64%) while his main contender, the NPP’s Paul Derkyi, obtained 13,076 votes (43.54%). Abraham Kwadwo Buadee of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) polled 1,032 and United Front Party’s Elvis Adjei, had 113 votes.
Only 49% of the total 62,364 registered voters in the constituency turned out to vote.Though the constituency has always voted for NDC Parliamentary candidates, the NPP has made significant improvements in voter gains in this election. The Amenfi seat became vacant following the death NDC Member of Parliament, Mr. John Gyetuah.
