Ed Sheeran has announced that he will be cutting social media out of his life, at least for the near future. The singer-songwriter posted a letter to Instagram -- an update that will be his last for a while -- to explain his decision in the early hours of Sunday morning (Dec. 13).
“Hello all. I’m taking a break from my phone, emails and all social media for a while, I’ve had such an amazing ride over the last 5 years but I find myself seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes so I’m taking this opportunity of me not having to be anywhere or do anything to travel the world and see everything I’ve missed,” Sheeran wrote.
Although his 16.1 million Twitter followers and 5.5 million Instagram followers may be disappointed by the news, Sheeran did give them something promising to look forward to: a new album, which he says will top both of his previous releases, 2011’s + and 2014’s x.
“To my family and friends, if you love me you will understand me buggering off for a bit, to my fans, the 3rd album is on its way and is the best thing I have made thus far," he said.
"See you all next autumn, and thank you for being amazing.”Other upcoming plans for 2016 will likely include undergoing surgery for a burst eardrum and attending the Grammy Awards ceremony. Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud” is nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance – and The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness, on which he’s a featured artist, is nominated for Album of the Year.
