Dr Edward Mahama wins PNC Presidential Candidate slot for 2016 elections

The 2008 Presidential Candidate of the People’s National Convention (PNC) Dr Edward Nasigre Mahama has been elected to lead the party in the 2016 elections.

He polled 492 votes to beat the 2012 flagbearer of the party Mr. Hassan Ayariga aka Ayaricough who managed with 426 votes at the party National Delegates Congress over the weekend in Upper West.

This will be the fifth time the Gynecologist and politician will be leading the PNC into presidential elections.

Dr Mahama received 3.0% of the votes in the 1996 elections. In his second attempt at the presidency in 2000, he won 2.5% of the votes. He placed third out of four candidates during the 2004 elections, winning 1.9% of the votes. His last contest was in the 2008 presidential elections.

In 2012, he was beaten by Hassan Ayariga to the flag bearer slot.

The congress also saw former general secretary Bernard Mornah being elected as the national chairman of the PNC, Awudulai is now the youth organiser with Desmond Ntow taking the national organizer spot.

The congress was however without controversy as confusion ensued between supporters of the two leading contenders for the presidential slot.

Gun shorts were reportedly heard as supporters of Hassan Ayariga and Dr Edward Mahama clashed at the congress grounds.

The Regional Crime Officer Superintendent Alhaji Fuseini confirmed the arrest but said no injuries were recorded.

The police had to call for re-enforcement to beef up security.

Hassan Ayariga who was defeated by Dr Mahama Ayariga was accused of alleged vote buying, having distributed some cash, motorcycles and mobile phones to some delegates in an attempt to influence them to elect him as flag bearer in the 2016 elections.
