The Coalition of Concerned Teachers- Ghana (CCT-Ghana) has called on government to rescind its decision to scrap the motivation allowance.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra Friday President of CCT-Ghana, Mr. Ernest Opoku vehemently opposed the idea saying “We are in disagreement with government because it is not government initiative or policy.”

“This policy was initiated by parents of our students who saw the need for it. So government cannot get up one day and decide to scrap it,” Mr. Ernest Opoku stated.

The teacher’s motivation allowance was instituted about four years ago after an agreement was reached between the Parent Teacher Associations and the Ghana Education service, being the employer of all teachers.

Per the agreement, students at the Senior High School level were levied 10 Ghana cedis for every academic term.

Government through the Ministry of Education on Monday announced the scrapping of the teacher’s motivation claiming it has outlived its usefulness.

But Mr. Ernest Opoku disagrees, arguing that teachers do a lot of work apart from the normal duties.

He expressed disappointment that government could do that without substituting it with any allowances to cushion them like what is being done to health and other workers.

“Indirectly you are saying that teachers shouldn’t be motivated and that they should stop all extra work they are doing apart from doing teaching and learning,” Mr. Opoku observed.
