The communications Director of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) Nana Akomea is urging Organized Labour to rise up against the government over the hikes in utility tariffs.
According to him, government has taken workers in the country for granted for far too long in the sense that “anytime government increases utility tariffs, workers’ salaries remain the same.”
“We have to rise up and protest against it and tell the NDC government that we won’t accept it,” Nana Akomea charged.
The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) last Monday announced 67.2% rise in water tariff and 59.2% for electricity.
Speaking on Oman FM Morning Show, National Agenda, Nana Akomea accused government for increasing workers salaries by only 10% and gone ahead to increase utility tariffs by more than 60%.
“We have to do something. Look AGI, Chamber of Commerce, Tema District Council of Labour, GUTA, ISODEC. I mean everybody is complaining, why
Nana Akomea was outraged that workers are made to bear the brunt of what he called incompetent leadership of President John Dramani Mahama led NDC administration.
He recalled that President Mahama prior to the 2012 elections had promised Ghanaians to stabilize the cedi and also solve the debilitating power crisis.
He described as appalling, the fact that in spite of all the promises, President Mahama has failed to live up to the expectation of Ghanaians and rather implemented policies which have worsened their plight.
