The police have arrested Bismark Osei Danso, the ringleader of the soldiers who invaded the offices of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The 58-year-old contractor/ex-soldier, who reportedly mobilized eight retired soldiers from Kakasunanka near Ashaiman and took them to the NPP headquarters, was picked up by the police at the premises of the Accra Circuit Court Tuesday.
He was arrested in connection with a bail bond he had signed as surety for someone who was standing trial for GH¢8,000 fraud at the Adjabeng Magistrate Court in Accra.
Interestingly, the person Danso signed for, according to Abdul Aziz Mohammed, counsel for the suspect, had jumped bail and had refused to pay the balance of GH¢4,000.
Meanwhile, four out of the eleven persons arrested in connection with the recent raid and ransacking of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) offices in Accra narrowly escaped police arrest in respect of the trial.
The four – Kwame Adu Annan, Nii Teiko Ayi-Bontey, Shamzi Dinni and Obed Yawson – were absent when the case was called in a court presided over by Ms Ruby Adjeley Quayson.
This compelled the trial judge to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of the accused persons.
However, in a dramatic turn of events, the four suddenly popped up in the court to purge themselves of the bench warrant issued against them, five hours after they went ‘missing’ from the court.
The four, together with seven others, are standing trial for unlawful entry, unlawful purpose on private premises and causing unlawful damage to the tune of GH¢28,000.
Appearing before the judge, one of them, Adu Annan, told the court that in the morning they were in court but only left the court premises to eat.
Ms Adjeley Quayson accordingly revoked the bench warrant earlier issued, although Michael Agoha, the seventh accused person, was still not in court for the trial.
Counsel for the suspects was also not in court when the matter was called, likewise the prosecutor, DSP Abraham Annor, who was present for the hearing in the morning.
