A group calling itself Zongo Movement for Change (ZOMOC) has welcomed the decision by the main opposition party, New Patriotic Party (NPP), to establish a special fund for the holistic development of Zongo communities across Ghana. The 2016 vice presidential candidate of NPP, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, at a press conference recently announced that the party intends to establish a fund called “Zongo Development Fund” to help develop Zongo communities across the country.ZOMOC, a pro-NPP group, in a press statement released in Accra, observed that the decision to establish such a fund to help reduce extreme poverty as being experienced currently under the President John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) government within the Zongo’s was in the right direction.
According to the statement, “In spite of the abundance of talent, incredible human resource and hardworking people in Zongo communities, development has stagnated and Zongo’s remain some of the most under-developed parts of the country in terms of infrastructural and human resource development.”“This unfortunate reality”, it claimed, “is not as a result of lack of effort by members of these communities, but it is the direct result of the complete neglect, deceit and failed promises by political leadership, coupled with a deliberate scheme and agenda to constantly exploit people in the Zongo’s for narrow objectives.
”The statement indicated that “For ZOMOC, the need to prioritise and fast-track the development of Zongo’s and the incredible human resource in Zongo’s is long overdue and it is for this reason that this particular announcement last week is highly welcome news for ZOMOC and the entirety of the Zongo populace.”It further noted that “ZOMOC also welcomes the Zongo Development Fund because the realization of such a vision will go in a long way to help in the development of Zongo’s which have been politically exploited by some political parties who have enjoyed immense support in the Zongo’s without any corresponding, tangible development to show.”It added that “the NPP’s proposal is a bold statement of intent and with the right legal framework to back it should they come to power in 2016, it will be an effective way of significantly ameliorating the stagnant development in Zongo’s and help transform the lives of the Zongo populace.
”Meanwhile, ZOMOC has also lauded the NPP for its plans to prioritize the exploration of minerals and oil in the North, as various studies have indicated an abundance of mineral resources in Northern Ghana but which remain untapped as a result of the failure of governments to prioritize the exploration and exploitation of such minerals as well as the failure to create an enabling environment to support the private sector to do so.
