The Tema Metropolitan assembly is Ghana’s best district. This is according to the 2015 Ghana district League table.

Tema managed to climb up from 20th place in 2014 by improving its score and overtaking several other districts. At the bottom of the table is Gomoa West in the Central Region.

Introduced in 2014, the district league table is a social accountability tool that ranks Ghana’s 216 districts by their level of development and service delivery.

The ranking which was put together by the United Nations Children fund (UNICEF) and the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD) is based on the District league table and uses indicators from 6 key sectors – health, education, sanitation, water, governance and security – to compile a single score for each district.

All the 216 districts are then ranked from the district in 1st place down to that in 216th.

With this ranking it is possible to track which districts are doing well in Ghana and can be learnt from and which are struggling and need greater support.

Speaking at the launch of the report Madam Susan Ngongi, the UNICEF country representative, said the league aims to improve transparency and accountability in national development by making district level wellbeing public.

“It’s not just where the districts are it’s also about why they are there and how we can help them to improve their positions. For his part a deputy local government and rural development minister believes the league will help citizens demand accountability from their leaders.

He also expects that the report will help deepen the discussions on service delivery at the district level and further asked that the scope of the study be extended.”

This to him is because the sort of destruction happening to the nation’s forage and fauna in the Ashanti and Eastern Regions is dangerous.
